It’s time to meet everyone’s MCs!
Back at the beginning of January, I created a linkup for writers. Basically, it’s a list of 10 questions for bloggers to answer about their MC (main character) — or any character they wanted — in a post, then link back to mine so I could compile a list. Well, now the time has come to share that list with the world!! I hope you all enjoy meeting your fellow writers’ incredible characters.
And after I share all your posts, I’m going to introduce you to my MC, Aionladon Rynael!
(If you want to do the linkup now, feel free to use my questions/link back to my post, but I won’t be sharing it, so it’ll function more like a tag from now on.)

And now it’s time to introduce my MC…
meet my MC: Aionladon Rynael from Remnant
If you’ve been reading my blog for any amount of time at all, you know about Remnant. If you haven’t, allow me to enlighten you 😉 Remnant is a high fantasy book in which the main characters take back their stolen kingdom (so original, I know — blame it on 11-year-old me) and has themes of forgiveness, identity, family/found families, and extending grace to your enemies. It features angsty elves, unbreakable friendships, women with all kinds of strength (physical and otherwise), a fantasy language, broken-but-redeemed families, and unexpected POVs.
(That was me pitching it to you like it’s a very awesome finished novel. In actuality it’s a messy 70k draft full of plot holes and bad writing. So. Someday it will be finished, but until then…. I will write it.)
1 // Introduce your MC. What’s their name? Age? Appearance? (Sharing collages/inspiration photos encouraged!)
Introducting… Aionladon Rynael! He’s 14 years old, enthusiastic, curious, prone to accidents, and longing for adventure. He’s… maybe 5’7″, with messy black-brown hair and green eyes and pale skin.
The Princess Will Save You (a book I have not yet read) has a great cover, and the boy on it reminds me — a little — of Aionladon. Imagine that boy but slightly younger, less tan, with darker hair and greener eyes.
So yeah. Maybe… just imagine a completely different person? 😂
He also looks kind of like a young Loki. Maybe.
2 // Explain how your MC fits into the plot of your book (as best you can without spoiling it all…).
*glares at my past self for writing such a vague and difficult question*
Well. Aionladon is a teenage boy (as I already said) and he lives with his grandfather and his best friend (Aionladon’s best friend, not his grandfather’s best friend) in a cabin near the woods in a country called Arendelin.
(Aionladon’s nickname is Aion so I’m just going to call him that from now on.) (Some of the time.)
Fourteen years ago (right before Aion was born), Arendelin’s rightful monarchs, the Raelin family, were kicked off the throne by Quinn Ira Athas, the queen’s jealous sister. Quinn rules a divided, fracturing land, keeping control via her army and her pretense of kindness. Aionladon doesn’t really care who’s on the throne; he just wants to be allowed to explore the forest and travel the kingdom.
So one day when his grandfather is out, he and Matthias (his best friend) go on a hike, meet an elf, and find out that they actually really should care who’s on the throne. Thus begins an adventure featuring identity crises and lots of walking through the wilderness and (maybe) some secret magical powers for Aion! (Maybe!)
That… was not very coherent. But yeah. That’s the beginnings of the plot.
3 // What’s the first thing your MC says in the story? The last? A random quote from the middle that you like?
First thing: “He’s off somewhere, doing something, like always.” (What a majestic beginning.)
Last thing (so far; it’s from the last chapter — but I wrote the last chapter before I wrote most of the middle): “I don’t need to be known, El.” (Um… he’s talking to a character who no longer exists…)
Random quote from the middle: “This, this is war. This is destruction and devastation. Arendelin is under the control of a delusional usurper and meanwhile you all squabble about whether the kononai is a serious enough offense to merit your help. How long you can refrain from helping and yet not break your vows. You quibble and you argue and meanwhile people are dying. [name redacted] died for this cause… My family was torn away from me. So many Arendians lost everything.” (A taste of eloquent, the-world-is-ending, I-don’t-know-what-I-want-anymore Aionladon for you. I kind of love him at this stage.)
4 // Which other character would die for your MC?
Hmm. Probably Aionladon’s best friend, Matthias. Definitely his grandfather. Possibly his father (but shh, we don’t talk about that). Oh, and Marelle. Yeah. But Marelle would probably die for anyone.
Nigel wouldn’t. Nigel knows how important he himself is to the world and thus wouldn’t die for anyone. (At least that’s what he tells himself.)
(Also, yes, I am being purposely vague as I talk about these characters. Because. You need to read the story in order, people.)
5 // Would your MC die for them?
I think he might die for Matthias, but it would take very specific circumstances. He probably wouldn’t die for his grandfather, but he’d never have the chance anyway. His father… nope. Marelle? *considers* It depends which part of the story we’re talking of. Pre-story Aionladon might not die for anyone.
Post-story Aionladon (or, say, book three Aionladon) would absolutely die for all of these people, even Nigel.
6 // Have any major details about your MC changed since you first created them?
Oh. Oh yes.
- He used to be eleven.
- He had different parents at one point.
- He was way tanner. (The being-pale thing is actually important to the story.) (Kind of.)
- He had a different eye color? I think?
- He was much more annoying.
- He never understood what was going on.
- He fell in love with an elf who was hundreds (thousands?) of years older than him. (*cough* not at all plagiarizing Paolini, was I)
- He wasn’t even the MC — he didn’t even have any POV sections! (Matthias was the MC at this point.)
7 // What characters (from books/movies not by you) remind you of your MC? Why?
He was originally inspired by a character called Henri, from a TV show called Liberty’s Kids that I really loved. I really hope he’s not like Henri any more, but that’s his origin.
He reminds me a little of Tink (the Wingfeather Saga), Murtagh (the Inheritance Cycle), and Peter (Outlaws of Time). I’ve also recently been inspired to make him a bit like Eugenides (the Queen’s Thief).
8 // Share your MC’s favorites!
- color: I don’t even know. Probably blue.
- food: Ooh, I have a scene in my novel where they talk about this! “Two buttered slices of bread and a plate of goat’s cheese, smoked lamb, and grilled peppers.”
- type of clothing: At the beginning of the story, anything that’s comfortable and not garish. By the end, grey and blue clothes with embroidery. *grins*
- place: the forest outside the elven capital
- type of music: qunun compositions by Kalrona
- season: spring
- smell: smoked meat, old library books
9 // If your MC wasn’t involved in your story, what would they be doing? (Basically: what’s their dream life? Where do they want to live, what do they want to do?)
Pre-story Aion would like to live in a town and travel extensively and have no one tell him what to do. Post-story Aion wants to hide in the forest and live alone with his memories (honestly, that would be very bad for him… thank goodness book two forces him to do something else).
10 // Share a fun extra (another collage, a playlist, a scene from the story, a drawing, etc.).
I finally tried my hand at making a collage for him. Behold, the result:
Also, I do have a playlist, but there are some spoilers in it (no, I’m not going to explain how) so I won’t link to it. Instead I’ll just list the songs:
all the way home // andrew peterson
go the distance // byu vocal point
you say // byu noteworthy
you will be found // byu vocal point
know who you are // moana
my shot // hamilton
only the beginning of the adventure // the lion, the witch, and the wardrobe
how far i’ll go / go the distance // scott & ryceejo
homeward bound // byu vocal point
And… a random scene from the story!
Sighing, he ate the food and wondered how far away its bringer was. “Hello?”
“Hello,” said a deep voice, and a tall man with slick dark hair and bright hazel-yellow eyes stepped out from behind a turn in the cliff face.
Aionladon was too surprised to say anything. The man held out a hand. Aionladon wordlessly handed over his plate. The man’s fingernails were painted with gold.
“Aionladon Rynael,” he said in his strange silky tones. “Welcome to my cage.”
“Who are you?”
“I am Argan Tarcontel, and I rule these mountains.”
“I thought you were under the authority of Arendelin.”
“That would depend on who is on the Arendian throne.”
“So you’re not under Quinn’s authority?”
“It depends on how I feel about her legislation.” Argan laughed, a smooth booming sound. “I don’t think Quinn would approve of me putting you in a cage, so today I’ve decided I’m not under her.”
“So why did you put me in the cage?” Aionladon leaned back against the bars of the cage, but their unyielding hardness didn’t help ease his discomfort. He scooted away from them.
“You were trespassing in my mountains.”
“So you imprisoned me? That doesn’t seem very rational.”
“Rationality is not something I tend to associate myself with.” Argan quirked his lips at Aionladon’s confusion.
Shadows darting through firelit halls. Red lines and red memories and fire, fire. Footfalls on stones, thump, thump, remembering smoke.
Aionladon shook his head.
“Apparently not with you either,” said Argan, amused. “What?” Aionladon blinked. “Sorry, I…” He trailed off. And when we saw the nave burning, it was like time froze.
I hope you enjoyed meeting Aionladon (and Marelle and Nigel and Matthias and everyone)! Don’t forget to check out everyone else’s posts and meet the host of cool characters who participated in the linkup 🙂
Until next time, friends!
P.S. What characters does Aionladon remind you of? Which MC from the linkup would you like to meet?
And… if you didn’t do the linkup, but you have an MC, answer one of the questions for them in the comments! I would love to meet your character!
